Join our 2010 Winter League!
Experience the true social and competitive aspect of curling. Sign up for our 2010 Winter League kicking off February 5. Come as an individual or as a team, all skill levels welcome!
How the League Works
Our league runs on Friday evenings from February 5 to April 9, 2010 (for a total of eight matches; we will have a break in the league during March, when the US Nationals come to Kalamazoo). For this league session, we will be curling on the middle two sheets only; as a result, we will have draw times at 6, 8 and 10 pm. Please show up at least 15 minutes before your scheduled match.
We will play a round robin league over the first five weeks. The sixth and seventh weeks will consist of a mini-tournament (also known as a “Bonspiel”) to determine the club champion for that league session. Check out the results of our 2009 Fall League and 2009 Fall Bonspiel.
You can sign up as a single person, a full team of four, or anything in-between. We like to provide every team with at least one experienced curler, but that is completely up to you.
If you want to be placed with anyone in particular, let us know in the submission form, and we’ll do what we can to honor that request.
League Fees
Club Members – $140
Non-Members – $200*
* You can become a Club Member for only $100 (it’s the smart way to go).
We request that you pay for the league by February 1. You can submit payment at any open ice event at Wings Stadium in the Annex, or you can send a check to:

12 team league for 8 weeks. Teams will curl at 7 and 9 pm. Times will be rotated to make it as fair as possible. A schedule will be posted once sign-up is complete.
We are moving to the Cube.
Due to the poor ice conditions on the outside sheets, we are moving to the Cube at Wings Stadium. We will be able to accommodate 16 teams. Life is good.
League sign up deadline has passed.
We do, however, still have a few openings to fill some teams, and we’re always looking for a big sub pool to help us fill in the teams when people can’t make it. Experience the true social and competitive aspect of curling. Come as an individual or as a team. All levels welcome. You might even win the league, a team of 75% beginners won the last two leagues. You will not be disappointed.
Member: $140 (see BECOME A MEMBER below)
Non-Member:$200

If you come as a team of four that’s great. If you come as an individual we will assign you to a team of four. If you have two or three people and want to play together, we’ll find you the additional players, just let us know your situation. If you are a beginner we will make sure you are on a team with an experienced curler. Learning is a large part of the league. The other part is about fun. No equipment is required.
Each night you’ll play a different team and meet new people. The social aspect of a curling club is a large part of the rich heritage of the sport.
I’m inexperienced is that okay?
95% of us are beginners. You’ll be in good company. We’re all just here to have fun. If you are a beginner we suggest you attend one of our learn to curl sessions, or visit us on Monday nights for open curling.
Can I just be a sub?
We will have a sub pool that you can sign up to be in. You will be charged a fee only when you play. Of course the playing time will depend on demand. Per game fee: Free (Member), $20 (non-member).
What if I can’t make it, can I call a friend to sub for me?
Non-registered subs will not be allowed unless our sub pool is empty.
Why does it cost so much?
Ice, and rocks are expensive and each game lasts for about two hours. So we have to pay for two hours of ice per game, and, unfortunately, we have to pass that charge along.
Annual membership $100
No gold or silver levels this year, just one level. Membership includes your membership to both the USCA and the GLCA, discounts on leagues and merch (like t-shirts and pins) and there is no sub fee for leagues. All membership dues go towards paying for rocks and club operating expenses (the dues help us exist). And the best benefit of all, you get to be a part of the biggest groundswell in the history of Southwest Michigan.

Our Fall 2009 bonspiel concluded on November 13 (a FRIDAY!), with Team Hall winning the championship game over the Elliott rink. Team Hall was skipped by Tom Leach, with vice skip Rick Thomas, Jason Hall at second, and Jeff Switzer throwing lead. Hall’s 3-0 lead after three ends was maintained through the 4th, which went blank. In the final end, Team Elliott managed to put three stones into a well-guarded house. Tom Leach managed to take out one of Elliott’s stones, leaving Kevin Artis with a difficult attempt to put the hammer stone in for the tying point. Team Hall squeaked out the win, 3-2.
The Fall 2009 league will conclude with a fun (if not unique) night of curling on December 11. The Winter 2010 curling season will begin in February. Look for sign-up information soon.
The brackets and times have been posted for our Fall 2009 league tournament. We will have three draws, beginning at 6:45 on November 6. Subsequent draws will begin at 8:15 and 9:45. Teams are asked to please be sure to be ready to start at your games on time, so that other teams aren’t slowed down. We will be playing five-end matches. The tournament will conclude on November 13, again, starting at 6:45.
THE FORMAT
We have 12 teams so we set up two six team divisions. We will be running this as a five week round robin within each division with week 6 and 7 being league playoffs. The eighth week will be used for curling and a party (details on that to come). The reason we are treating this last week differently is, there is a scheduling problem with ice. Even though we scheduled the ice months ago we just can’t get eight sequential Fridays. See the schedule below and note the gap between week 7 and 8. We’re sorry about this, it is unavoidable.
SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER
• Games start promptly at 6pm and 8pm. Be courteous and be there ready to curl. Early games must start on time. If you haven’t paid yet get there extra early, so we can get that taken care of well before game time.
• Games are 7 ends.
• No end starts after 7:45 for the first draw and 9:45 the second draw. If you didn’t get all 7 ends in you have to go with the score you have. Hence the prompt start.
• THE BEST WAY TO GET ALL ENDS IN – When it’s your turn to throw, start walking down there and get in the hack as soon as your opponent has thrown his or her rock. That doesn’t mean after it stops, it means right after the rock crosses the hog line.
ETIQUETTE
• When the other team is throwing their rocks, stand between the hog lines and off to the side so they can see the other end and are not distracted.
• Skips, when your team is not throwing you may stand directly behind the opposing skip if you like, to see what their rock does, but keep your broom off the ice so the person throwing doesn’t see two targets.
• Every game starts and ends with a handshake.
• The third (or Vice) from each team does the coin toss before the game and will decide the score at the end of each end. If measuring is required, the thirds do that as well.
• If you are wearing street shoes to curl in, carry them in instead of wearing them. That will cut down on the grit on the ice.
• You are on the honor system, if you burn a rock just take it off the sheet. Don’t wait for the other team to call yo on it — that’s part of the spirit of the game.
SET UP
• Each team will be responsible for setting up at least once. If you don’t know how to set up don’t worry, you will be grouped with people who do.
• Be there ready to set up at 5:30.
• Skips are responsible for making arrangements if they will not be there to set up.
