Howdy folks! Labor day has passed us by, and by now you’ve all put away your white slacks and started putting up your holiday lights… I’m sure that got you thinking that it’s just about time for curling season to begin! Well it is!

We’ve been hammering out the details, trying to figure out the whens and the wheres and the costs… and we think we’ve got it.

Monday Night Super League
Monday nights from 8:30 to 10:30, starting November 28. The cost will be $375 for club members ($440 for non-members), and we’ll be curling for 16 straight weeks.

Friday Night League
Our Friday night league will begin November 4, and run for 8 weeks. There will be some gaps in there. The cost is $185 ($245 for non-members). We will run another 8-week league in the winter… so don’t be discouraged if this one doesn’t work out for you.

Beginner’s League
We will also be offering a short, 3-week league for beginners. The cost on this is $85, and you can choose from two sessions. The first will be October 10, 17 & 24. The second session will be held November 7, 14 & 21. These will be two hour sessions, held on Monday nights from 8:30 to 10:30. Folks will get a good introduction to the game. It’s a great opportunity to find out if curling is a sport that you’d like to play some more, AND you’ll have plenty of time to round up a team to participate in one of our regular leagues.

You can download the membership form here. Bring it to one of our open curling events on Monday evenings (more details to come — the first is coming up September 19, 2011 at 8:30), or drop an e-mail, and we’ll try to work out the details…

Good curling!

First things first… the holiday season is among us, and it sure was refreshing to see curling included on the 2010 Lego Advent Calendar! If only they had included some curling mini figures or little Lego stones. For those, you have to be creative, and if you want to see a fantastic Lego curling set-up, take a look at this. It was done around the same time as the 2010 Winter Olympics, but it’s still pretty impressive for those nerdy enough to enjoy Lego AND curling. And if you’re interested in some fantastic Lego curling, take a look at the last end of this fantastic Lego curling match. The last shot is truly unbelievable!

Okay… now for some serious stuff. We have an extra sheet available during our Monday Super League™. Interested curlers can use the ice from 8-10 p.m. each Monday night. Cost for non-members is $20; members get the ice for $10 each. We do have a limit of 8 people, so if you are interested, be sure to show up in a timely manner.

Our Friday night league Winter session will get underway on February 11. There is still time for you to get your team together to join our next session. Visit the league page for more information.

Also, there has been a call for some open curling dates, and we have worked some out.

Sunday, 12/26, 5-7 pm
Friday, 1/14, 7-9 pm
Friday, 1/21, 7-9 pm
Saturday, 1/29, 8-10 pm
Saturday, 2/26, 9-11 pm
Saturday, 3/5, 8-10 pm

One or more of these will offer learn-to-curl opportunities too. We’ll learn more about that in the next day or two, and post that information here as well.

Check the calendar for more information about more bonspiels in the area. We’ll be posting more there in the next few days.

Well, the Kalamazoo Curling Club IS going to be functioning this winter… The change in the weather has finally gotten us in gear to announce dates and times for our Fall and Winter leagues. Take a look at our event calendar for league dates, and also for a SMALL amount of bonspiels that are happening nearby.

For a full list of bonspiels all over the U.S., visit the USCA web site. We will have more information here as it becomes available… perhaps a change or two…

The folks at Wings Stadium have had a busy summer. They have taken over operations of the other ice rinks in Kalamazoo (now called Wings West), AND they have totally gutted the Annex and put in a new floor over there… which we hope will lead to an AWESOME curling experience for the club.

Stay tuned for more information… curling season starts VERY soon! Good curling!

Blog posts have been a bit few and far between now that curling season has slipped into history, and the first day of summer has officially arrived… but there are a few things worth letting you all know about.

First, Wings Stadium will be hosting open curling on the LAST Monday in June, July and August. The time and price are the same as always: 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with a cost of $10 per person (12 and under are free). Let us know that you’re planning on going by E-mail or on the Facebook event page.

Also, our friends at the Fort Wayne Curling Club, down Indiana way, are hosting a summer bonspiel on the 21st and 22nd of August. We would love to send some ambassadors from the Kalamazoo area down to their first attempt at a bonspiel — it may offer some inspiration and ideas for a future Kalamazoo Curling Club event! If you are interested in helping to form a team, send an E-mail and we’ll help get you in touch with other people who express an interest. We have offered to loan them two sets of rocks for their bonspiel (they plan on having 8 sheets available for play), so we really would like to send a group down there to accompany our rocks.

Fall and Winter league information will be available here very soon. We want to get you signed up for 2010-11 curling fun. We have tentative plans for continued curling on Friday nights (broken up into two sessions, as before) and an expanded “Super League” on Monday nights (longer season that covers the entire curling season). Our Beginners’ Leagues were very successful, and we are planning on incorporating those into our 2010-11 season as well.

We have officially be designated as a non-profit organization, so we will also be ramping up the fundraising for our coming season. We’re hoping to get our rock sponsorship program going very soon, too.

So that’s what’s going on this summer… we’ll keep you posted as we have more developments in the next few weeks.

Well, we’ve finally worked out how we’re going to work out our club championship this year. Things were complicated because we had so many teams! This is a good problem to have… So we’re going to play from 7 p.m. to Midnight, with a total of 3 draws. The first draw will match the #7 teams from each division against the #8 teams, and the #5 teams against the #6 teams. The second draw will match the #3 and #4 teams against each other and the #1 and #2 teams. The winners of the #1 vs #2 matches will play against each other at 10 p.m. for the club championship.

The first and second draws will take place at 7 and 8:30 p.m. These will be 5 end matches, with NO NEW ENDS starting after 8:15 for the first draw and 9:45 for the second draw. The third draw will be 7 end matches, and will start at 10 p.m.

The non-winners (there are no losers here!) in the first two draws will be eliminated from the tournament. We encourage EVERYONE to hang out and be social for the evening. It would be great to have a good crowd watching the 10 o’clock draw and cheering on the championship game. The Icehouse is scheduled to be open on Friday night, so people should be able to get some foodstuffs and libations to bring over to the cube viewing area.

7 PM DRAW
Teams Thomas, MSU Green, Hall, MSU White, Elliott, Schmitt, M Gleaton and Cook

8:30 PM DRAW
Teams Eckstrand, MSU Sparty, Brezinsky, Chase, Thomspon, Deater, C Gleaton and Kinkade

The sport of curling has received a HUGE lift (as it does every 4 years for some crazy reason) due to an increase in media coverage, something about the Winter Olympic games, and on a more local level, Kalamazoo’s involvement with the 2010 USA Curling National Championships. All you need to play are loose fitting clothes and clean, rubber-soled shoes, like running shoes. Cost is $50. You will not be disappointed.

To sign up, stop by our merchandise table during the Nationals, or email this address.
