We were busy last week… so here’s a little catch up on some of the press that we missed while we were busy.

The Early Draw

Over the past 5 days here at the USA Curling Nationals, we’ve been putting together a daily newsletter which is being distributed around the facility. It lets people know about the day’s draws, yesterday’s scores and some information about some of the teams. We’ve been busy working at the event, and haven’t been posting them… and that just doesn’t make sense.

So here’s today’s edition. We’ll do better about getting up future editions.

The Kalamazoo Gazette just keeps the hits coming… Today’s paper features an article focused on the good people who have volunteered their time to help with the officiating at the Nationals.

Guide to the Nationals

People have been asking about specifics… who’s playing when, etc… The USCA has posted the complete schedule [Microsof Excel file] on their web site. Ticket prices vary, and you’ll find all the details here.

For people interested in coming out on the opening day, here are the facts that you’ll want to know:

Saturday, March 6 — Opening Ceremonies @ 2:30 p.m.
All the women’s teams play at the same time. All the men’s teams play at the same time. The starting time for all of these matches is called a draw. The women will be playing in the first draw of the day, which is set for 4:30 in the afternoon. Find out more about the women’s teams here.

WOMEN’S DRAW – D1
Sheet 1 – 4:30 – Horn vs Lank
Sheet 2 – 4:30 – Coleman vs Hamilton
Sheet 3 – 4:30 – Walker vs Wapola
Sheet 4 – 4:30 – Brown vs Heisler
Sheet 5 – 4:30 – Hambley vs Wright

The men’s first draw is at 8:30 p.m.

Sheet 1 – 8:30 – Wight vs Brown
Sheet 2 – 8:30 – Farbelow vs Kakela
Sheet 3 – 8:30 – Birr vs Hames

People interested in trying this silly and wonderful game themselves will have that opportunity from 5-9 p.m. on Friday and from 9-11 on Saturday. Find more details here.

As the 2010 US Curling National Championships get closer and closer (less than a week away!!), we’re finding just a little more attention from the outside world. There is an article in today’s Kalamazoo Gazette which talks about how it came to be that the Nationals found a 2010 home in Kalamazoo.

Dean Gemmel and his Kalamazoo Curling Connection

Great article in today’s Kalamazoo Gazette about Dean Gemmel, who left Kalamazoo in 2007. Gemmel will be returning to Kalamazoo in March to participate in the 2010 US Curling National Championships. Among other things, Dean is the host of the Curling Show, a podcast devoted to the sport.

Tune in to 89.1 FM TODAY during the noon hour for a conversation with the vice president (“vice skip,” as we like to say around here) regarding the Kalamazoo Curling Club, the 2010 Curling Nationals, the Olympics and all things curling. KCC Member in the News

When the Kalamazoo Curling Club was just trying to get its legs, Greg Eigner was more than willing to help out. He and his family made the trip to Kalamazoo from Fort Wayne, Indiana in the midst of a blizzard to help out with our first learn-to-curl sessions. Since then he’s been a card-carrying member of the club, even with the big distance between Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo. The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette just ran this article about him in this past Sunday’s newspaper (could have been front page news if not for those Colts!).

March 6 is Go Curling Day in Michigan!

Now, we’ll be among the first to admit that our government has much better things to be doing with their time than to spend any amount of energy discussing curling on the floor of the Michigan legislature. There’s a 2 billion dollar deficit and high unemployment to worry about — c’mon people!! That being said, it sure is neat that March 6, 2010 has been declared “Go Curling Day” in Michigan. Sound too crazy to be true? Read the proclamation yourself!
