USA Curling National Championship Day

The day has finally come… it is the end of our tournament here in Kalamazoo… and time to send two teams off to the world championships The women will head off to Swift Current, SK, Canada; The men will head off to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

It’s been a fantastic week, and we can’t express enough enthusiasm and appreciation at the VOLUNTEER officials who came from all over the country… the VOLUNTEER ice crew that came from far and near… all the other VOLUNTEERS who made this event possible… and, of course, to all the fantastic, fun, good-spirited athletes that were at the center of this all… We have truly enjoyed hosting you this week, and look forward to seeing you again… on the ice! Thank you! Great curling!

On the women’s side, Team Brown awaits the winner of the semifinal match between Team Lank and Team Wright.

On the men’s side, Team Fenson awaits the winner of the semifinal match between Team Farbelow and Team Stevens.

The women’s final will begin at 10 a.m. and the men’s final will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. It’s been a FANTASTIC week, and everyone seems to agree that Kalamazoo has done a great job hosting this event. If you haven’t been able to come down to Wings Stadium to enjoy the atmosphere and meet this huge bunch of talented and friendly people… then you’ll have to do the next best thing, which is to watch the finals, live… on the web.

Okay, so they get their digs in about the possibility that curlers are still somehow less than “real” athletes… but here is yet another voice that speaks the high praise of the game now that the Olympics have shared this sport with our country. It comes from the Michigan Daily, the student newspaper at the University of Michigan. For at least one person there, curling saved the Winter Olympics!

No such thing as bad publicity?

Maybe Dave is still harboring some anger issues from some of his office shenanigans finding the light of day…

Curling will always be the butt of jokes. Not much we can do about that. So maybe the best spin we can put on yesterday’s Top Ten list from the Late Show with David Letterman is that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Maybe people that saw his Top Ten list will be slightly intrigued… I don’t know… but here it is for you to enjoy or rebel against.

You may recall that at one point, Springfield was due to host the Olympic games. Homer was prepared to make a killing selling Olympic mascot souvenirs (all kids love Springy the Spring!). Alas, Bart wrecked it all, and the IOC awarded the games to Shelbyville. D’oh! Well, tonight the Simpsons get another chance at the Olympics, as Homer and Marge qualify for the US Olympic curling team. Tune in to FOX at 8 p.m. to find out how Marge manages to hurt her arm… do the Simpsons bring home gold for Team USA?

USA vs CANADA

The Kalamazoo Curling Club’s social secretary tells us that there is talk of getting people together to be happy and social while watching Team USA take on Team Canada on Monday, February 22nd at noon. We will be meeting at the Icehouse restaurant located at Wings Stadium. Curling play will be well underway, and this match could have important ramifications. No need to RSVP, as there will be plenty of room for everyone… so bring a friend and have a long lunch hour with the Kalamazoo Curling Club!

Shuster on Leno

Does anyone still watch Leno? If they do, the had a chance to see the skip of the US Olympic curling team, John Shuster the other night. Keep in mind that John Shuster and his team will be in Kalamazoo for the US Nationals, which start on March 6th.

Colbert Curls!

Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert made big news in 2009 by stepping up to sponsor the US Speed Skating team. Since 2010 is going to be the “curlingest” year that Kalamazoo has ever seen, it’s only fitting that the first “Colbert Report” of 2010 will feature his attempt to become a member of the U.S. Olympic squad by becoming a member of the U.S. Olympic curling team!
