First things first… the holiday season is among us, and it sure was refreshing to see curling included on the 2010 Lego Advent Calendar! If only they had included some curling mini figures or little Lego stones. For those, you have to be creative, and if you want to see a fantastic Lego curling set-up, take a look at this. It was done around the same time as the 2010 Winter Olympics, but it’s still pretty impressive for those nerdy enough to enjoy Lego AND curling. And if you’re interested in some fantastic Lego curling, take a look at the last end of this fantastic Lego curling match. The last shot is truly unbelievable!

Okay… now for some serious stuff. We have an extra sheet available during our Monday Super League™. Interested curlers can use the ice from 8-10 p.m. each Monday night. Cost for non-members is $20; members get the ice for $10 each. We do have a limit of 8 people, so if you are interested, be sure to show up in a timely manner.

Our Friday night league Winter session will get underway on February 11. There is still time for you to get your team together to join our next session. Visit the league page for more information.

Also, there has been a call for some open curling dates, and we have worked some out.

One or more of these will offer learn-to-curl opportunities too. We’ll learn more about that in the next day or two, and post that information here as well.

Hammerfall vs. Sweden

As mentioned on last night’s coverage of the women’s curling match between the USA and Sweden, we present “Hammerfall vs. The Swedish Womens Olympic Curling Team.”

Hammerfall is a heavy metal band that formed in Sweden, and this is their music video for their single “Hearts on Fire.”

It might just be the greatest thing the Internet has ever produced. Seriously.

Something to Watch For…

Well, the US Men have lost their first match 7-5 against Germany. They’ll be playing again this evening against Norway. Now, the thing to keep a VERY close eye on will be Team Norway’s pants. They may not be easy to spot, so you might need to do some eye exercises to help you see them. Okay, this might not be entirely true. They’re actually attracting quite a lot of attention, and hopefully Team USA won’t be too distracted by them. Want a pair for yourself?

March 6 is Go Curling Day in Michigan!

Now, we’ll be among the first to admit that our government has much better things to be doing with their time than to spend any amount of energy discussing curling on the floor of the Michigan legislature. There’s a 2 billion dollar deficit and high unemployment to worry about — c’mon people!! That being said, it sure is neat that March 6, 2010 has been declared “Go Curling Day” in Michigan. Sound too crazy to be true? Read the proclamation yourself!

Colbert Curls!

Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert made big news in 2009 by stepping up to sponsor the US Speed Skating team. Since 2010 is going to be the “curlingest” year that Kalamazoo has ever seen, it’s only fitting that the first “Colbert Report” of 2010 will feature his attempt to become a member of the U.S. Olympic squad by becoming a member of the U.S. Olympic curling team! Perhaps the best Zombie Curling movie EVER

What will they think of next?

“Deadspiel” has just won the Toronto Zombie Short Film Festival. That’s right: a Zombie curling movie has just won an award. You can visit their web site to see a very short (what it lacks in length, it makes up for in humor!) trailer for the film, and visit YouTube to see a little behind the scenes look at the movie. We’ll have to begin to see what we need to do to get this movie shown in Kalamazoo during the US Nationals.

[UPDATE] “Deadspiel” will be showing tonight (Tuesday, November 3, 2009) as part of the Mitten Movie Project in Royal Oak, Michigan. Tickets are $10, and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Springfield Curls!

Just in time for all the hoopla about curling — Kalamazoo Curling Club leagues, the Winter Olympics, the US National Curling Championships — add a little bit more curling to the cultural mix… courtesy of The Simpsons.

In an episode scheduled to run in February, Homer and Marge will be forming a mixed curling team along with Homer’s mom and Principal Skinner. I think we have to wait until February to find out who’s skipping… but there is more to learn about the episode at CBC Sports website.
