Kalamazoo Curling Club Summer News

Blog posts have been a bit few and far between now that curling season has slipped into history, and the first day of summer has officially arrived… but there are a few things worth letting you all know about.

First, Wings Stadium will be hosting open curling on the LAST Monday in June, July and August. The time and price are the same as always: 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with a cost of $10 per person (12 and under are free). Let us know that you’re planning on going by E-mail or on the Facebook event page.

Also, our friends at the Fort Wayne Curling Club, down Indiana way, are hosting a summer bonspiel on the 21st and 22nd of August. We would love to send some ambassadors from the Kalamazoo area down to their first attempt at a bonspiel — it may offer some inspiration and ideas for a future Kalamazoo Curling Club event! If you are interested in helping to form a team, send an E-mail and we’ll help get you in touch with other people who express an interest. We have offered to loan them two sets of rocks for their bonspiel (they plan on having 8 sheets available for play), so we really would like to send a group down there to accompany our rocks.

Fall and Winter league information will be available here very soon. We want to get you signed up for 2010-11 curling fun. We have tentative plans for continued curling on Friday nights (broken up into two sessions, as before) and an expanded “Super League” on Monday nights (longer season that covers the entire curling season). Our Beginners’ Leagues were very successful, and we are planning on incorporating those into our 2010-11 season as well.

We have officially be designated as a non-profit organization, so we will also be ramping up the fundraising for our coming season. We’re hoping to get our rock sponsorship program going very soon, too.

So that’s what’s going on this summer… we’ll keep you posted as we have more developments in the next few weeks.

2010 Club Champions — Chris Gleaton Rink

The 2010 curling season is coming to a close… what a great season it’s been! Our Friday night league wrapped up with inter-divisional matches that led to an inter-divisional championship match between Division One’s Thompson rink and the Chris Gleaton rink from Division Two. While the final match held pretty close in the early portion of the 7 end match, when the last stone came to rest, it was the Chris Gleaton rink (Chris Gleaton not present!) that had earned the Winter 2010 Club Championship. Congratulations to Sarah Perkins, Pam Nelson, Ryan Gleaton and Chris Gleaton on a great season.

Friday League Tournament 2010

Well, we’ve finally worked out how we’re going to work out our club championship this year. Things were complicated because we had so many teams! This is a good problem to have… So we’re going to play from 7 p.m. to Midnight, with a total of 3 draws. The first draw will match the #7 teams from each division against the #8 teams, and the #5 teams against the #6 teams. The second draw will match the #3 and #4 teams against each other and the #1 and #2 teams. The winners of the #1 vs #2 matches will play against each other at 10 p.m. for the club championship.

The first and second draws will take place at 7 and 8:30 p.m. These will be 5 end matches, with NO NEW ENDS starting after 8:15 for the first draw and 9:45 for the second draw. The third draw will be 7 end matches, and will start at 10 p.m.

The non-winners (there are no losers here!) in the first two draws will be eliminated from the tournament. We encourage EVERYONE to hang out and be social for the evening. It would be great to have a good crowd watching the 10 o’clock draw and cheering on the championship game. The Icehouse is scheduled to be open on Friday night, so people should be able to get some foodstuffs and libations to bring over to the cube viewing area.

Big Day for Team Fenson!

Team Fenson came up with two big wins today to improve their record to 6-3 in the tournament — good enough for 4th place heading into the last day of round-robin play (as this is written, there is still one more draw to be played today). In the first draw of the day, the US defeated Team Italy 8-5. In the mid-day draw, the US defeated the Scottish team 7-5!

Men’s World Curling Championships

The 2010 Men’s World Championships get underway today. Here in the States, the best place to see the action is going to be on NBC’s Universal Sports network (not carried by many providers around here). You’ll be able to see some matches during the week, and the championships next week.

World Curling Federation Rules Changes?

There will be a vote next month in Italy that may have global implications regarding the sport of curling. There are some folks that are concerned that matches are taking too long (sometimes going beyond three hours), and that one way to eliminate that is to shorten matches from 10 to 8 ends, eliminate tie-breakers in tournaments, etc. Something to keep an eye on for sure…

Learn to Curl — Saturday, April 3

Learn to Curl Saturday April 3rd 7-9PM.

Come learn what this funny game is all about. On ice instructors will explain the game, technique and have you curling in no time. $15 for 1 hour of instruction and curling. Registration required. To register, email this address with your time preference.

All you need are some loose fitting clothes to allow for flexibility (blue jeans not recommended) and some rubber soled shoes, like running shoes. We’ll supply everything else. Please arrive 15 minutes early for off ice prep.

Kalamazoo’s Winner Atop the World

Erika Brown, who led her rink to the World Championships by winning the USA Curling National Championships in Kalamazoo just over a week ago, now sits atop the leader board at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championships. Brown’s team defeated Japan 10-3 and Russia 8-6 to earn the top spot early in this tournament.

No Open Curling – Monday, March 22

Open curling on Monday, March 22 has been cancelled due to a previously unscheduled K-Wings hockey game. Life sure was easier when we had 13 curling sheets in the complex. Now that we’re down to 8, we have to compete for time.

Future Monday night sessions may be in jeopardy as well; it all depends on how the K-Wings do as they work their way through the playoffs.

In other news, we may have a Saturday learn-to-curl session coming up in the not-too-distant future. We’ll keep you posted here.
